American beach volleyball teams made a strong statement at the Yucatan Challenge, with nine teams securing spots in the main draw. Four pairs battled through Wednesday’s qualifiers to join five pre-seeded duos in the women’s competition.
Devon Newberry and Jaden Whitmarsh delivered a standout performance, qualifying as the lowest-seeded team after two hard-fought tie-breaker wins. Other American teams advancing included:
- Madison Shields & Xolani Hodel
- Savannah Simo & Abby Van Winkle
- Hailey Harward & Molly Phillips
International competition was fierce, with teams from Germany, Spain, and China also advancing. Notably, Germany’s Louisa Lippmann and Spain’s Paula Soria, both preparing for the Paris 2024 Olympics, secured spots through the qualifiers.
Main draw play in Puerto Progreso begins on Friday, featuring 32 teams competing for top honors in this Beach Pro Tour event.
