Youth Olympic Games: Beach Volleyball Stars Compete for Glory in Dakar

The 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar are set to deliver an exciting showdown at Saly Beach West from October 31 to November 4. Significantly, this will be the first time the Olympic Games are hosted in Africa, marking a pivotal moment in highlighting the continent's growing role in global sports. A total of 24 teams will compete, with 16 of these teams supported by the FIVB's Volleyball Empowerment Programme, underscoring the international effort in developing young talent.

Among the top contenders, China's leading team, Ming Zhuang and Siyu Qi, are focused on their potential to win gold. With strategic investments in their training and development, they are well-positioned for success. Similarly, in Pool B, the Dutch duo Jara Both and Matilda de Groot are strong competitors, as are Mozambique's top African pair, Assucena Xavier Mabjaia and Célia Nelson Machava, competing in Pool E.

The competition format is designed to ensure intense matchups. The teams are divided into six pools, from which the top two teams and the two best third-placed teams advance to the Round of 16. Subsequent rounds will determine the contenders for the knockout phase, culminating in the bronze and gold medal matches on November 4.

This global competition not only showcases emerging beach volleyball talent but also emphasizes the importance of support programs for development. The FIVB's Volleyball Empowerment initiative, through funding various national federations, has played a crucial role in raising standards and expanding the influence of beach volleyball worldwide. As these young athletes vie for Olympic success in Dakar, the effectiveness of such support programs becomes ever more evident.
