Ahman & Hellvig Rise to Second Place in Global Beach Volleyball Rankings

Swedish beach volleyball duo David Åhman and Jonatan Hellvig have reclaimed the No. 2 spot in the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Rankings after a triumphant gold medal performance at the Ostrava Elite event on the Beach Pro Tour. Their victory, contributing 1,200 points, brought their season tally to 7,220 points from seven events.

Just one week prior, the pair had slipped to fourth. However, their latest success propelled them ahead of Argentina’s Nicolas and Tomas Capogrosso, and the Netherlands’ Stefan Boermans and Yorick de Groot, who are now third and fourth respectively.

Current Top Teams and Movements

Men’s Rankings:

  • 1st: Norway’s Anders Mol and Christian Sørum (8,800 points)
  • 2nd: David Åhman and Jonatan Hellvig (7,220 points)
  • 3rd: Nicolas and Tomas Capogrosso (Argentina)
  • 4th: Stefan Boermans and Yorick de Groot (Netherlands)

Despite earning 1,100 points in Ostrava, the Norwegian leaders only saw 200 added to their ranking due to the FIVB’s “best 8” results policy, which disregards the lowest of a team’s nine best finishes.

Other notable movements include:

  • Ondrej Perusic and David Schweiner (Bronze in Ostrava) – up two spots to 26th
  • Poland’s Michal Bryl and Bartosz Losiak – re-entered the top 10, now ninth
  • Latvia’s Martins Plavins and Kristians Fokerots – up to seventh, their best ever ranking

Women’s Rankings: Stability and Surprise Breakthroughs

In contrast to the men’s rankings, the women’s top five remained unchanged:

  1. Thamela Coradello and Victoria Lopes (Brazil)
  2. Terese Cannon and Megan Kraft (USA)
  3. Svenja Müller and Cinja Tillmann (Germany)

The Brazilian duo extended their lead by clinching gold in Ostrava, increasing their total to 7,560 points.

A remarkable surge came from Switzerland's Anouk and Zoé Verge-Déprem, who leaped 53 positions to rank 39th after securing bronze—their first-ever podium finish at an Elite-level event.

Olympic Qualification Heats Up

With the Paris 2024 Olympics on the horizon, recent results are decisively shaping the qualification outlook. Teams are intensifying their pursuit of points, aiming to secure a valuable ticket to the Games.
