IOC President Joins Youthful Beach Volleyball Surge at Dakar 2026

Beach volleyball is attracting considerable interest at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, as IOC President Kirsty Coventry attends to witness young athletes vying for medals on Saly Beach. This event marks a significant milestone, being the first Olympic gathering hosted in Africa. The inclusion of beach volleyball in the Youth Olympic Games emphasizes the sport's growing global appeal and its development trajectory.

The Dakar 2026 Games will feature around 2,700 young athletes, with a strong focus on opportunity and legacy. There is a significant emphasis on athlete development through programs like the FIVB and Olympic Solidarity’s Youth Athlete Development Programme. Many participants in the beach volleyball segment have been trained through initiatives such as the CAVB Beach Volleyball Youth Development Cup held earlier in the year, which brought together African teams to prepare for the games.

The competition features 31 of the 48 boys' and girls' teams supported by Volleyball Empowerment, highlighting a major effort to improve the sport across Africa and ensure its lasting influence. With beach volleyball on a significant upward path, Dakar 2026 serves both as a platform to showcase young athletic talent and as a catalyst for the sport's expansion throughout the continent.
