The Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) has officially outlined the qualification system for beach volleyball teams aiming to compete at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. With the competition scheduled to unfold from July 14 to 30, 2028, at Alamitos Beach, national teams now have a well-defined route to Olympic contention.
A total of 48 teams—24 men’s and 24 women’s—will participate. Each National Olympic Committee (NOC) is allowed to send a maximum of two teams per gender. As the host nation, the United States is guaranteed one entry per gender and can potentially qualify a second through other eligible avenues.
Qualification Routes
The FIVB outlined four distinct qualification pathways:
-
Continental Qualification (5 spots per gender)
Top teams from the 2026 Continental Championships or equivalent Continental Tour Finals, representing each of the five Continental Confederations, will earn a spot. -
World Championships (1 spot per gender)
The winners of the 2027 FIVB Beach Volleyball Senior World Championships in the Netherlands will gain automatic entry for their respective NOCs. -
Olympic Ranking (14 spots per gender)
Teams with the highest point totals on the Olympic Ranking List up to the cutoff in 2028 (TBD) will claim the bulk of qualification slots. -
Olympic Qualifier Series (3 spots per gender)
Remaining positions will be filled through this final series, with further details expected in 2026.
This qualification framework offers athletes and national federations a transparent and structured roadmap toward one of LA28's showcase sporting events. Located at the iconic Alamitos Beach, the tournament promises a competitive and picturesque setting.
