Mozambique's Beach Volleyball Team Sets Sights on LA 2028 from Adelaide

Mozambique’s national beach volleyball teams are setting their sights on the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games through a strong showing at the 2025 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships, which will take place in Adelaide, Australia, from November 14 to 23. This event is a significant milestone in their ongoing journey toward Olympic qualification.

The Southern African nation will be represented by both men’s and women’s teams, signaling a fresh chapter under the guidance of Dutch coach Han Abbing. His leadership is being supported by the FIVB's Volleyball Empowerment programme, which is designed to help emerging volleyball nations make an international impact.

Women’s Team Outlook

The women’s squad features:

  • Vanessa Muianga – A veteran making her fourth World Championship appearance.
  • Mércia Mucheza – A rising star debuting at the championship level.

They are grouped in Pool D and set to compete with elite squads from the United States, Germany, and France.

Men’s Team Debuts

The men’s team includes:

  • José Alberto Mondlane
  • Osvaldo Mungoi

Both 26 years old, they will be making their senior World Championship debuts in Pool K, facing off against Argentina, Germany, and Canada.

Preparations and Achievements

In the lead-up to the championship in Adelaide, Mozambique’s teams have benefited from valuable international experience:

  1. Competed in the Beach Pro Tour Elite16 in Cape Town (October).
  2. Earned a silver medal for the women and a bronze for the men at the 2024 CAVB Beach Volleyball Championships.

Funding through a $336,000 Coach Support initiative from the FIVB has further accelerated Mozambique's development. This program aims to bolster national beach volleyball programs and cultivate world-class athletes.

This performance-driven effort marks Mozambique’s renewed commitment to becoming a strong contender in both African and global beach volleyball arenas. Their journey in Adelaide reflects their strategic push toward an Olympic breakthrough by 2028.
