Qatari Duo Cherif & Ahmed Climb Back to World Number Two in Beach Volleyball

Qatar’s elite beach volleyball duo, Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan, have risen to the No. 2 spot in the FIVB World Rankings after securing a crucial victory at the Newport Beach Elite16. This is the first time they’ve reclaimed this position in over three years, signaling a powerful comeback on the international stage.

This latest triumph adds momentum to their impressive 2025 season, which now boasts:

  • Three Elite-level titles
  • Four overall victories on the Beach Pro Tour
  • Wins in Gstaad, Rio de Janeiro, and Newport Beach

Now with 7,480 ranking points, Cherif and Ahmed are within 1,120 points of Norway’s top-ranked duo, Anders Mol and Christian Sørum. Their climb back into the top two follows a 170-week absence, underscoring their tenacity and consistency in facing elite competitors.

Other notable ranking movements from the Newport Beach tournament include:

  • Evandro Oliveira and Arthur Mariano Lanci of Brazil moving from No. 7 to No. 5 after a silver medal performance
  • Chilean brothers Marco and Esteban Grimalt jumping from No. 32 to No. 23 by securing bronze

In the women’s division, the American duo of Kristen Nuss and Taryn Kloth made an impressive leap from No. 11 to No. 4 following their gold medal win in Newport Beach. This marks their third win of the season, placing them in serious contention for the top spot in upcoming competitions.

With the Beach Volleyball World Championships in Adelaide approaching, these shifts in the rankings promise a fiercely competitive tournament on both the men's and women's sides.
