Gavira and Huerta Make History at Newport Beach Volleyball Pro Tour

Spanish beach volleyball duo Adrián Gavira and Alejandro Huerta have achieved a significant milestone by qualifying for their first-ever main draw at an Elite-level event on the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour. This historic achievement took place at the 2025 Newport Beach stop, marking a promising moment in their newly formed partnership.

Competing in only their fifth tournament together, Gavira and Huerta advanced from the qualifiers with two impressive straight-set victories. They first swept the Czech pair Tomas Semerad and Adam Stocek 2-0 (21-10, 21-17), followed by another clean win against Americans Tim Brewster and Ryan Ierna 2-0 (21-19, 21-13).

Previously, Gavira joined forces with Huerta after his former partner, Pablo Herrera, retired at the end of 2024. Despite injury delays pushing their debut to mid-2025, the pair had already shown potential with top-ten finishes in Challenge-tier events, though they had fallen short at Elite-level stops like Montréal and João Pessoa.

Now competing in Pool C at Newport Beach, their opponents in the main draw include:

  • Evandro Gonçalves and Arthur Lanci (Brazil)
  • Martins Plavins and Kristians Fokerots (Latvia)
  • Taylor and Trevor Crabb (USA)

Other teams that advanced from the qualifier round are:

  • Javier and Joaquin Bello (England)
  • Marco and Esteban Grimalt (Chile)
  • Thomas Hodges and Zachery Schubert (Australia)

This tournament marks the tenth stop in the Elite 16 series for the 2025 season. The main draw began Wednesday, with matches unfolding through Thursday. The top three teams from each pool advance to a single-elimination bracket on Friday, culminating in the semifinals and medal matches on Saturday.

Newport Beach plays a critical role in the season as athletes pursue valuable ranking points and look to establish momentum moving forward.
