Alvarez & Moreno Triumph in Yucatan's Top Seed Showdown

Spain’s Daniela Alvarez and Tania Moreno delivered an impressive performance in the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour’s Yucatan Challenge, defeating Brazil’s top-seeded Carol Solberg and Rebecca Cavalcanti in the eighthfinals. Their hard-fought 2-1 (21-15, 17-21, 15-11) victory in Puerto Progreso secured them a quarterfinal clash against Switzerland’s Tanja Huberli and Leona Kernen.

Carol and Rebecca managed to overcome American qualifiers Madison Shields and Xolani Hodel in a tight sixteenthfinal but couldn’t get past the second-seeded Spanish duo. Alvarez and Moreno’s sharp play, featuring five aces from Moreno, was instrumental in their triumph.

Other Quarterfinalists

Americans Devon Newberry and Jaden Whitmarsh continued their strong run by upsetting Paraguayan Olympians Giuliana Poletti and Michelle Valiente. They then defeated Brazil’s Andressa Cavalcanti and Taina Bigi to earn a quarterfinal berth, where they will face Ukraine’s Maryna Hladun and Tetiana Lazarenko.

Other American teams also advanced to the quarterfinals:

  • Kimberly Hildreth and Teegan Van Gunst will take on Austria’s Dorina and Ronja Klinger.
  • Toni Rodriguez and Kylie Kuyava-De Berg will clash with Italy’s Valentina Gottardi and Claudia Scampoli.

Quarterfinal action begins on Saturday at 11:00 local time, with victorious teams advancing to the semifinals later that day.
