Mozambique's Rising Stars Aim for Olympic Glory in Adelaide

Mozambique's men's and women's beach volleyball teams are gearing up for a significant milestone as they head to the 2025 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship in Adelaide, Australia. Scheduled for 14–23 November, the event represents a major opportunity in Mozambique’s ongoing pursuit of qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

After near misses in the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympic cycles, Mozambique steps into this Championship with renewed focus and a revamped squad. This progress is largely attributed to the support of the FIVB's Volleyball Empowerment initiative, which has fueled the country’s long-term development strategy.

Team Highlights

  • Women’s Team: Led by veteran Vanessa Muianga, making her fourth World Championship appearance, and 25-year-old newcomer Mércia Mucheza.
  • Placed in Pool D, they will compete against teams from the USA, Germany, and France.
  • Recently secured silver at the 2025 CAVB Beach Volleyball Championships in Morocco.
  • Men’s Team: Comprised of José Alberto Mondlane and Osvaldo Mungoi, both debuting at the senior Championship level.
  • Drawn into Pool K to face Argentina, Germany, and Canada.
  • Achieved bronze in the CAVB Championships and gained essential match experience at the Beach Pro Tour Elite16 in Cape Town.

Championship Format

The World Championship includes 48 teams per gender, split into twelve pools. The top-performing teams from each pool will move on to the knockout rounds, where the journey continues toward the crowning of new World Champions.

A Path Toward Growth

For Mozambique, participation in Adelaide is about more than just sporting results—it's an important step in building a lasting competitive presence on the global stage. With strategic coaching and enhanced player development, Mozambique is setting the groundwork for future success extending well into future Olympic cycles.
